This 7th December 2020, we’re celebrating International Civil Aviation Day – an event highlighting the importance of air transport in connecting countries and supporting growth worldwide.
At Cobalt Aerospace, a core element of our company ethos is our commitment to creating products that help passengers to have a safer, greener, more comfortable, and an overall better air travel experience.
International Civil Aviation Day presents an opportunity to highlight the ways we are working to help civil aircraft operators enhance the experience of their passengers:
Safety
It goes without saying that safety in air travel is of the utmost importance, but the spotlight on health and wellbeing whilst flying has been even more intense in 2020. This year, we introduced our first safety product – GLS-7 photoluminescent floor path marking. Created using a patent-pending process alongside innovative manufacturing techniques and with the highest quality materials, GLS-7 is proudly the most cost-effective system of its type. Safety should be simple: we are excited to see this product make fulfilling vital safety regulations accessible and convenient for all aircraft operators when our unique ordering system for GLS-7 enters the market in 2021 (watch this space!)
Comfort
Enhancing the comfort of passengers can take many forms, and is not just about leg room or seat cushion padding. With our first-to-fly wireless chargers – Cobalt Unplugged – operators can offer passengers the most convenient way to charge their personal devices whilst travelling. Our flagship product Cobalt Spectrum improves the air travel experience for passengers and crew, and is currently flying with many flag carrier airlines and business aircraft across the globe. However, this full colour, drop-in LED mood lighting solution doesn’t just offer an aesthetic boost for the interior of an aircraft. It has been shown that mood lighting can also improve a passenger’s wellbeing by regulating their internal body clock and helping to lessen the effects of jetlag.
Environment
All of our products are designed to be lightweight, helping operators to decrease the weight of their aircraft and, importantly, their fuel usage. We also place a strong focus on developing more durable products, engineered to last longer or make use of resources already on the aircraft so less waste ends up in landfill. Operationally, we continue to strive to reduce waste, recycle and reuse. This year, we launched our Freighter Conversion Support service, designed to help operators with elements of passenger-to-freighter (P2F) conversion, giving old aircraft a new life as useful transportation, rather than a trip to the scrap heap.

International Civil Aviation Day was established in 1994 by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and recognised as an official, annually observed event by the United Nations (UN) two years later. The day aims to help reinforce worldwide awareness of the importance of civil aviation to the growth, development and social connection of states and citizens worldwide. UN Secretary-General António Guterres sums it up perfectly:
“International aviation lets us discover our world’s wondrous geographic and cultural diversity. It enables us to learn about and benefit from each other. And it connects societies through global travel and trade, advancing access to food, education and healthcare”
This global observance feels particularly relevant this year, with COVID-19 having threatened many businesses and livelihoods within our industry. It is doubtless that aviation will play a critical role in “lifting the world to recovery from COVID-19”, and this is an aim we are proud to continue to support and be a small part of.
