Ambient lighting for a premium long-haul cabin upgrade
When Belgium’s flag carrier and largest airline Brussels Airlines wanted to revamp their long-haul fleet, Cobalt Spectrum was the perfect choice to help create a premium passenger experience.
A new travel experience for long-haul passengers
In 2019, Brussels Airlines revealed a significant investment into its long-haul fleet of A330s; aiming to offer passengers a premium level of comfort and hospitality. Brussels Airlines collaborated with a London-based design agency to create experience akin to a “boutique hotel at 30,000 feet”, incorporating details drawn from Belgian culture, art and history.
We worked alongside the team to create bespoke lighting, with scenes tailored to each phase of flight. Our LED mood lighting units play a key role in creating a warm, ambient cabin environment for passengers, with modes designed to help combat fatigue and jet lag.
“We designed a new mood lighting system throughout the entire cabin, which is independent in each class. Brussels Airlines’ values are based around hospitality, warmth, authenticity and sharing. We wanted our new cabins to reflect the same ambience.”

Special lighting modes for brand and well being
Highlighting and complementing the premium quality materials – such as wood, leather and richly textured fabrics – used in the design of the cabin was essential to creating a holistically warm and comfortable atmosphere. To achieve this, we created several special lighting scenes, including a mode for taxi, take-off and landing, with red on the sidewalls and blue on the ceiling to complement Brussels Airlines’ signature brand colours.
The newly revamped cabin designs also use lighting to ease the transition between sleep and waking; encouraging a better quality of rest and relaxation and a reduction in jet lag. Lighting scenes transition to offer a ‘sleep mode’ on night time flights and whilst cruising. To gently awaken passengers in the morning, Cobalt Spectrum units slowly fill the cabin with a design reminiscent of an African sunrise, with light blue side lights and a deep orange ceiling – a vibrant light that inspires happy, relaxed feeling and a sense of refreshed alertness.
